Welcome to Stoke Class

STOKE BEACH: All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

Welcome to our Foundation Unit, Stoke class. We accept children from the age of 3 years, right up until the end of the Foundation Stage (5 years old).  Our teacher is Mrs Wilson and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Brassil (Monday and Tuesday) and Miss Johnson (Wednesday to Friday).

Our Curriculum:

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and Development Matters as our starting point to plan and deliver an inspiring curriculum for our children supporting their development and learning across all seven areas: Communication and Language, Personal, Emotional and Social development, Physical Development, Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We are committed to ensuring all children experience success and feel safe. We do this by supporting the children to develop excellent learning behaviours which will enable them to progress as they move through the school and, very importantly, that all children build a strong sense of belonging.

Our school day consists of a mix of adult-led activities to directly teach Phonics, Reading and Maths alongside extended periods of play within our classroom and outdoor environments. We have ‘learning through play’ zones both inside the classroom and within our enclosed outdoor area. The children have access to our outdoor area throughout the year, whatever the weather.

Our Learning Environment:

Our outside areas include a mud kitchen, sand pit, climbing frame and slide, workshop area, a stage and plenty of planks, tyres and crates. We have timetabled access to the school garden, outdoor classroom, scrap store and trim trail and we enjoy sessions using the bikes and trikes in the main school playground.

Inside, we have a wide range of resources accessible for the children to choose from which support their development and learning across all areas of the EYFS curriculum.

In addition, we make good use of our beautiful local surroundings. On Fridays, we walk to the woods to our Forest School area. We have termly visits to a local farm.  In the Summer term, we visit Mothecombe for Beach School.

Phonics – We believe all children can and should learn to read. We teach daily phonics using  Little Wandle . Children take home reading books that are carefully matched to their phonic ability and are regularly assessed to ensure progression is being made or to identify where more support could be needed.
